Why Does Your Church Meet on Sunday Nights?
Since planting Portland Gospel Church, we've talked with many people who were surprised to find a church meeting on Sunday evening. Some work Sunday mornings, others attend with family elsewhere in the morning, and some simply appreciate gathering for worship at the end of the weekend. Whatever the reason, we're thankful to provide an opportunity to gather around God's Word each Sunday evening.
At this stage of our church plant, we rent our meeting space from another congregation. Meeting on Sunday evenings allows us to use a beautiful, well-maintained facility while we continue growing. Although we'd gladly meet on Sunday mornings if that option became available, we're grateful for the opportunity to worship together each Sunday evening.
Why Don't Most Churches Have a Sunday Night Service?
For many years it seemed normal for churches to have a Sunday evening service. Most churches used to have service at least three times a week! But in today's age, churches have focused more on the Sunday morning worship service and midweek bible studies and discipleship.
Over the last several decades, many churches have shifted away from Sunday evening services. Research has documented a long-term decline in overall church attendance, and many congregations have consolidated their ministries into Sunday mornings and weekday Bible studies. As a result, churches with Sunday evening services have become much less common than they once were.
A 2020 article by Barna shows that church attendance has declined by one-third since the 1990, and the number of Americans praying is at an all time low. Sure, this article is a few years old in 2026 (at the time of this writing), but the trend has consistently declined for many years.
Portland is also a very unchurched city, ranking at the top of the US list of most 'religiously unaffiliated', so it stands to reason that with less demand for services, comes with less options for it.
This article from 2010 is from another faith tradition, but it supports the fact that even within a broader spectrum of evangelical Christianity, Sunday services have declined.
Should Churches Have Sunday Night Service?
Just because we can have Sunday night service, should we? That's a good question! The bible gives no specific times or places for churches to meet, perhaps other than "the first day of the week" (1 Cor 16:2). Even still then, churches have liberty to meet whenever and wherever, even outside of church buildings.
There is one example of a church gathering on a Sunday night. When Paul was in Troas (Acts 20:6-12), the church there gathered late into the evening on the "first day of the week" (Acts 20:7). Paul also preached until midnight, so perhaps that wouldn't be very popular today either!
Acts 20:7
And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
Here we see a church gathering in the evening, but it seems to be more out of necessity than it is out of doctrinal instruction. The pastoral epistles (1 & 2 Timothy and Titus), where churches get much of their pastoral instruction from, also do not give us much information for when and where a church should meet.
We can conclude that churches have the liberty to meet on Sunday night, or not to have an evening service at all. It seems that churches have the liberty to determine their meeting times based on what best serves their congregation and ministry.
